Children are full of energy and one of the best ways to keep up with them is do physical activities together
When both parents work full-time, you’re in a great position to spend lots of time with your grandkids. Chances are you are playing some role in raising and mentoring them, so you have a great opportunity to help develop healthy habits!
Having raised your own children, you know how much time, energy and attention they require. That means it’s probably a good idea to get active, if you’re not already. One great thing about children is that keeping them active doesn’t have to be an arduous task requiring lots of planning. There are actually really simple ways to get active with them.
Do the school run without a car
There’s a very good chance that grandparents may need to school pick up and drop off from time to time. If the distance allows for it, why not walk or cycle? You’ll save on gas, reduce your carbon footprint, get your step count up and set a good example.
Take a hike
We’re in the final stretch of summer and cooler weather is just around the corner. Why not take the little ones on a hike that they will manage or even a walk around the neighborhood if a hike isn’t possible. You’ll still all be able to move and you can catch up on what they’re been up to at school.
Try exergaming
Yes, this is a thing! If you must be indoors and want to be a bit competitive, dust off the Nintendo Wii and have a game of bowling, baseball, tennis or golf. You’ll get your heartrate up and some studies suggest that these activities help to improve balance and coordination in older adults.
Try a yoga class
There are yoga classes to suit almost any need or age group. If you can’t take the kids to your gym, why not find a quick exercise for them online that you can do together in your living room. It’s gentle on the body while still giving you a great workout and you’ll be ab able to introduce it to your grandkids early.
Play ball
Pick your favourite ball activity and head outside. Whether you prefer football, baseball, basketball or any other activity involving a ball, grab the kids and head outside for a game of kickabout or catch. They’ll get the benefit of fresh air, they’ll move around, they’ll improve their coordination and they will get to spend quality time with you.
Spending time being active with your grandkids is a great way to bond with them while encouraging them to incorporate healthy habits into their routines. It’s also a great way for all of you to have fun while creating memories that they will cherish forever.
