Making these habits routine will help protect you and your loved ones

Maintaining a healthy diet and regular exercise are both essential to strong and resilient physical and mental health (check out some proven benefits of leading an active lifestyle here). The ideal case scenario? Go over these six points with your little ones; habits adopted in their youth will last a lifetime!

  1. Wash your hands properly

95% of people do not wash their hands properly. Lather your hands with soap, and be sure to get the back of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. Scrub for at least 20 seconds (the equivalent of singing Happy Birthday twice) and rinse well.

 2. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing

Germs take flight when you cough or sneeze. Always cover your mouth with a tissue, and if you don’t have a tissue handy sneeze into your elbow instead of your hands to minimize spreading germs.

 3. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects or surfaces

You can’t guarantee that others are taking proper precautions by following the habits on this list. Repeatedly clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces to protect your health.

4. Thoroughly cook your food and wash produce properly

It always makes sense to practice good food safety habits. Help prevent foodborne illnesses by thoroughly cooking your food and properly cleansing fresh produce like fruits and veggies.

 5. Avoid touching your face

Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up all manner of germs. Always cleanse your hands properly before touching your face, specifically the eyes, nose or mouth.

6. Stay at home if you don’t feel well

Feeling under the weather? Stay home to prevent spreading it (whenever possible). Some people are more sensitive (or immunocompromised) than others and so their bodies may respond differently. So, even if your symptoms appear mild, stay home to recuperate and halt the transmission cycle.

Adopting extra measures to help protect ourselves and those around us is always a good idea. The recent COVID-19 developments make these tips more relevant than ever. During this specific health situation, it is important that you follow the Government’s directions closely and stay home. Remember to avoid close contact with people who have respiratory infection symptoms.

Be proactive by incorporating these health-conscious habits into daily life. With time, they will become routine. Stay safe!
